Il est donc primordial, en complément des soins dentaires, que le praticien sache éveiller l?intérêt du patient à son hygiène bucco-dentaire. L?entretien motivationnel est une technique de communication visant à amener le patient à plus de responsabilité quant à son hygiène orale, afin de contrôler l'évolution de la maladie. En dentisterie, un style original d?entretien motivationnel a été développé selon la théorie de l?autorégulation de Leventhal. Dans cette étude, nous avons cherché à savoir si des praticiens sans formation préalable à ce type d?entretien motivationnel étaient capables d?amener les patients à un niveau d?hygiène bucco-dentaire optimal ou bien si une formation spécifique leur était nécessaire. Periodontal disease affects many people, who quite often, are not even aware of its existence and its seriousness on the long term. Thus, it is essential for a dentist, in addition to the care provided, to arouse patients? interest into their oral hygiene. Motivational interviewing is a communication technique which goal is to bring people to more responsibility towards their oral hygiene, in order to get periodontal disease under control. In dentistry, a particular type of motivational interviewing has been developed according to Leventhal?s self-regulation theory. The aim of this study was to assess if practitioners without a specific training to this type of motivational interviewing were able to bring patients to an optimal oral hygiene level or if a specific training was needed.
