Mis en place au cours des années 1990, ce modèle exploite des principes conceptuels beaucoup plus anciens. Ainsi, ces deux termes, largement superposés, sont souvent définis par une industrie lithique particulière, propre à un espace et à une période donnée. Par un glissement de sens, ces notions ont parfois été corrélées aux seules armatures et pointes de flèches, laissant dans la pénombre de larges pans des outillages préhistoriques et donc de leurs acteurs. Les entités « culturelles » ainsi définies paraissent hermétiques et gomment les dynamiques sociales et spatiales. Une redéfinition du concept de « style » est donc proposée dans le cadre de cette thèse, en s’appuyant sur différentes écoles de pensées. Ce travail s’intéresse plus particulièrement aux éléments qui influencent la forme finale d’un outil lithique. Par conséquent, l’intégralité de la biographie de l’objet est prise en compte ici, et plus précisément, le processus de fabrication de l’outillage ainsi que les variantes formelles observées. Pour tester cette vision du style, les données de plusieurs sites mésolithiques, implantés dans l’ouest européen, ont été collectées. Afin d’assurer la comparabilité des informations recueillies, seuls les sites fouillés et datés de manière absolue ont été sélectionnés. La proximité des chaînes opératoires et des assemblages lithiques a ensuite été calculée pour chaque occupation, à l’aide d’indices de dissimilarité. Cette opération est complétée par une analyse en coordonnées principales, couplée avec une classification hiérarchique, afin d’étudier les regroupements des sites comparés, en fonction de leur ressemblance technique ou typologique. Pour terminer, ce travail débouche vers la formation de « constellations de pratique », des regroupements d’unités stratigraphiques qui possèdent un savoir-faire technique et un outillage analogue, ainsi que vers leur mise en réseau. Cette méthodologie a permis d’identifier une dizaine de « constellations de pratique », qui s’échelonnent tout au long du premier Mésolithique jusqu’au début du second. Ces dernières montrent une certaine continuité chronologique et partagent des points communs avec le cadre chrono-culturel connu. Certaines « constellations de pratique » mettent également en avant l’usage de chaînes opératoires et un outillage parfois similaire entre des sites distants géographiquement (notamment entre le nord de l’Italie et la Belgique, ou entre le nord et le sud de la France). En outre, les analyses effectuées permettent de modérer l’importance de certains objets dans la définition de quelques « constellations de pratique », notamment les armatures. Pour terminer, ce travail a permis d’aborder les questions liées à la diffusion des savoir-faire techniques et des caractéristiques formelles des outils. Cela est notamment possible par l’examen des réseaux de similarité. This work is based on the observation that the chrono-cultural framework still used today to deal with the Mesolithic period suffers from confusion between “style” and “culture”. Established in the 1990s, this model exploits much older conceptual principles. These two terms, largely superimposed, are often defined by a particular lithic industry, specific to a given area and period. By a slippage of meaning, these notions have sometimes been correlated with armatures and arrowheads alone, leaving large part of prehistoric equipment, and consequently the people involved, in the dark. The “cultural” entities defined in this way appear hermetic, obscuring social and spatial dynamics. This thesis therefore proposes a redefinition of the concept of “style”, drawing on different schools of thought. More specifically, this work focuses on the elements that influence the final form of a lithic tool. Consequently, the entire biography of the object is taken into account here, and more specifically, the process by which the tool was made, as well as the formal variants observed. To test this view of style, data from a number of Mesolithic sites in western Europe has been collected. To ensure the comparability of the information gathered, only sites that had been excavated and get radiocarbon dates were selected. The proximity of the “chaine opératoire” and of lithic assemblages was then calculated for each occupation, using dissimilarity indices. This operation was completed by a principal co-ordinate analysis, coupled with a hierarchical classification, in order to study the gatherings of the sites compared, according to their technical or typological similarity. Finally, this work led to the formation of “constellation of practice” who groups stratigraphic units based on their technical and morphological similarity, and to their networking. This methodology has enabled us to identify a dozen of “constellations of practice”, spanning the whole of the Early Mesolithic to the beginning of the Late Mesolithic. These show a degree of chronological continuity and have common points with the known chrono-cultural framework. Moreover, some “constellations of practice” highlight the use of similar “chaîne opératoire” and equipment between geographically distant sites (in peculiar among Northem Italy and Belgium, or from the south and the north of France). In addition, the analyses allow to moderate the importance of some objects in the definition of the “constellations of practice”, notably armatures. To conclude, issues related to the diffusion of technical know-how and the formal characteristics of tools can be developed in this work. This is possible in peculiar by the study of similarity networks.
