La cognition sociale fait référence aux capacités telles que la perception, la catégorisation ou la mémoire qui permettent aux individus d'organiser leurs interactions avec leurs congénères. Ces capacités sont essentielles aux individus puisqu'elles leurs permettent notamment d'être attentifs à leur environnement social et non-social et donc de choisir un partenaire sexuel, d'interagir avec d'autres individus (con- et hétérospécifiques) et de communiquer. Dans un premier temps, nous nous sommes intéressés, chez l’étourneau sansonnet, à l’effet et à l’effet de temps de différentes conditions de vie (captifs en conditions naturalistes, captifs en conditions appauvries) sur les caractéristiques attentionnelles individuelles et avons caractérisé la relation potentiellement existante entre ces caractéristiques attentionnelles et la communication vocale. Pour cela, nous avons enregistré individuellement la communication vocale des étourneaux puis nous avons caractérisé leur attention visuelle grâce à des tests d'attention standardisés où des stimuli visuels ou auditifs, sociaux ou non sociaux leur étaient présentés. Nous avons montré qu’indépendamment de leurs conditions de vie, les individus, en réponse aux stimuli, produisaient plus de coups d’œil (< 1s) que de regards (> 1s) et utilisaient plus leur vision monoculaire que leur vision binoculaire. Les individus élevés dans des conditions appauvries produisaient plus de comportements attentionnels que les individus élevés dans des conditions naturalistes. Nous avons aussi montré que certaines des caractéristiques attentionnelles observées entre et au sein des groupes évoluaient en fonction de la durée d’exposition des oiseaux à leurs conditions de vie respectives. D’autres au contraire, restaient stables. Enfin, il est apparu que les individus élevés dans des conditions naturalistes chantaient plus souvent que ceux élevés dans des conditions appauvries et que les individus ayant un réseau social développé sont également ceux qui sont les plus attentifs Dans un second temps, nous avons développé une méthode nouvelle et originale pour évaluer en milieu naturel et en groupe social, la capacité des oiseaux à discriminer et à catégoriser de manière appropriée les stimuli sociaux / biologiques et non biologiques. Nous avons pour cela étudié en Afrique du Sud une espèce d'oiseau phylogénétiquement apparentée à l'étourneau sansonnet, l'étourneau à ailes pâles, Cette étude a montré que les oiseaux ont accordé plus d'attention aux stimuli d'oiseaux qu’aux stimuli de paysage, aux stimuli non familiers qu’aux stimuli familiers et aux stimuli d’autres espèces d’oiseaux qu’aux stimuli d’étourneaux. Ainsi, la prise en compte des conditions de vie des animaux testés semble primordiale à la réalisation de toutes expériences scientifiques. Celles-ci pouvant en effet influencer les caractéristiques attentionnelles individuelles, caractéristiques qui interviennent dans de nombreux mécanismes (e.x. perception, apprentissage, mémorisation). In this thesis, we investigated social cognition in two songbird species, the European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) and the pale-winged starling (Onychognathus nabouroup). Social cognition refers to abilities such as perception, categorisation or memory that allow animals to organise their interactions with other animals. These abilities are essential for individuals as they allow them to be aware to their social and non-social environment and thus to choose a sexual partner, to interact with other animals (conspecific and heterospecific) and to communicate. In a first step, we investigated the effect and time effect on individual attentional characteristics in starlings living in two different living conditions (captive in naturalistic conditions, captive in impoverished conditions). Furthermore, we characterised the potential relationship between these attentional characteristics and vocal communication. To do this, we recorded the starlings' vocal communication individually and then characterised their visual attention through standardised attention tests. The type of stimuli were visual or auditory, social or non-social. We showed that regardless of their living conditions, individuals, in response to stimuli, produced more glances (< 1s) than gazes (> 1s) and used their monocular vision more than their binocular vision. Animals reared under impoverished conditions produced more attentional behaviours than individuals reared under naturalistic conditions. We also showed that some of the attention behaviour observed between and within groups changed with the duration of exposure of the birds to their respective living conditions. Others, on the contrary, remained stable. Finally, it appeared that starlings reared in naturalistic conditions sang more often than those living in impoverished conditions and that starlings with a developed social network were also the most attentive. In a second phase, we developed a new and original method to evaluate the ability of birds to discriminate and categorise social/biological and non-biological stimuli appropriately in a natural environment and in social groups. We studied a bird species phylogenetically related to the European starling, the pale-winged starling, in South Africa. This study showed that birds paid more attention to bird stimuli than to landscape stimuli, to unfamiliar stimuli than to familiar stimuli and to stimuli from other bird species than to starling stimuli. Thus, the living conditions for tested animals seem to be of primary importance in any scientific experiment. These conditions can influence individual attentional characteristics, which are involved in many mechanisms (e.g. perception, learning, memory).
