     <dcterms:abstract xml:lang="fr">Les sols contribuent à assurer une grande partie des besoins humains essentiels. Mieux les préserver implique de mieux les comprendre. Le carbone organique est l'un des éléments clés de leur fonctionnement, mais les processus qui régissent sa dégradation à l'échelle des microorganismes sont encore difficiles à élucider, en partie à cause de la complexité spatiale considérable du sol. L'objectif de cette thèse a été de comprendre comment les processus de transport et les répartitions spatiales de bactéries et de carbone soluble influençaient la dégradation de ce dernier par les bactéries. La confrontation d'expériences numériques et d'observations a montré que cette question ne pouvait pas être résolue sans connaître les traits biologiques des bactéries. En fonction de l'efficacité des bactéries à consommer le carbone, leur activité peut être limitée tantôt par la dilution du carbone, tantôt par la compétition pour le carbone même au sein d’une même population. La généralisation de ces résultats suggère que la compétition entre bactéries joue un rôle répandu et significatif dans les sols, et met en lumière une activité inattendue des zones « pauvres » du sol. Plus généralement, les résultats permettent de suggérer une relation théorique entre la mobilité du carbone, la mobilité des bactéries, leur localisation optimale dans le sol et leur efficacité de consommation du carbone.</dcterms:abstract>
     <dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">Soils contribute to ensuring a large part of basic human needs. To better preserve them, we need to better understand them. Organic carbon is one of the key elements of their functioning, but the processes that govern its degradation at the microbial scale are still difficult to elucidate, in part because of the considerable spatial complexity of soil. The objective of this PhD thesis was to understand how the transport processes and spatial distributions of bacteria and soluble carbon influenced the degradation of the latter by bacteria. The confrontation of numerical experiments and observations showed that this question could not be answered without knowing the biological traits of bacteria. Depending on the efficiency of bacteria to consume carbon, their activity can be limited rather by the dilution of carbon or by the competition for carbon even within the same population. The generalization of these results suggests that competition between bacteria plays a widespread and significant role in soils, and highlights an unexpected activity of "poor" soil zones. More generally, the results suggest a theoretical relationship between carbon mobility, bacterial mobility, their optimal location in soil and their carbon consumption efficiency.</dcterms:abstract>
