     <dcterms:abstract xml:lang="fr">Ce travail est né d’une question laissée en suspens par Léo Strauss : pourquoi Machiavel n’a-t-il pas intitulé les Discours sur la Première décade de Tite-Live, le « De Republica » alors que tel était son propos ? La réponse se trouve en partie dans la biographie de Machiavel et dans les souffrances dont il paya son attachement à la République. La clé se trouve aussi dans l’écriture même du Florentin qui troque une approche scolastique au profit d’une idéologie de l’engagement et de l’action. Pour Machiavel, la capacité de la raison à appréhender le réel se nourrit de la compréhension et de l’imitation de précédents illustres, réels ou romancés. Son rapport à l’Histoire et aux mythes qui nourrissent sa pensée et illustrent ses recommandations feront de lui un logographe de la République. Il est celui qui ouvre une porte sur la science politique moderne. 	
Pour en défendre l’entrée aux profanes il forgera un trousseau de clés herméneutiques que nous nous efforcerons de rassembler. Son œuvre, du Prince jusqu’à ses lettres familières ou à ses écrits littéraires forme un champ clos où se mêlent sciemment le vrai et le faux. Au cœur de ce « Machiavelli Code », le Secrétaire a enfoui son trésor le plus précieux, son legs intellectuel qui vise à apprendre à ses héritiers comment fonder et conserver une République. Cette thèse, après avoir jeté les bases de l’herméneutique machiavélienne tentera d’en appliquer les principes. Ainsi, aura-t-on une chance de reconstituer le « De Republica » que Machiavel a volontairement dissimulé au commun des mortels.

     <dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">This thesis research arose from a question left unanswered by Leo Strauss: Why didn’t Machiavelli call the The Discourses on Livy a « De Republica » when that was his intention ? The answer results in part from Machiavelli's biography and in the in the sufferings that he paid for his attachment to the Republic. The key is also found in the very writing of the Florentine, who swaps a scholastic approach in favor of the ideology of commitment and action. For Machiavelli, the ability of reason to comprehend reality is nourished by the understanding and imitation of illustrious, real or romanticized precedents. His relationship to history and the myths that nourish his thought and his recommendations will make him the logographer of the Republic. He is the man who opens a door to modern political science. In order to defend the entry of the laymen, he will build a hermeneutic key ring that we will strive to gather. His work, from the Prince to his familiar letters or literary writings, forms a closed field where the true and the false mingle. At the heart of this « Machiavelli Code », Florentine buried his most precious treasure, his intellectual legacy which aims to teach his heirs how to found and preserve a Republic.
