</dcterms:abstract>
<dcterms:abstract xml:lang="en">BACKGROUND : Though attitudes are evolving in Western societies regarding fathers-to-be presence during pregnancy, they are not asked much about their feelings concerning this experience. This period seems to be demanding but is part of their individual transition to fatherhood. The commitment of the father-to-be in pregnancy depends on the place granted by the mother, but also on his desire to occupy it and invest the child to come. OBJECTIVE : Understand the experience and involvement of fathers-to-be during pregnancy which are monitored by General Practitioner, in order to better include them in this specific care. METHOD : This is a qualitative study based on semi-directed interviews, conducted between December 2018 and May 2019 in Ille-et-Vilaine, France. Data has been analyzed thematically. RESULTS : 13 fathers-to-be have been included in the study. According to men, pregnancy is a fundamental step in their personal development because their social status and their involvement in couple and family life changes. They assume a new role, being more accountable for material support to the family and assistance to their partner. However, this role can often be difficult to find out and they may feel excluded, as if they were simple spectators. They ask higher consideration, and to be allowed to attend the follow-up and express their feelings, but also to be valued within society. General Practice can be leveraged to enable individualized care of parents-to-be, based on its proximity and role of coordination. CONCLUSION : Fathers-to-be are looking for better integration and a fully recognized status during pregnancy. General Practitioners should give them careful consideration during this transition phase to parenthood, which could be the most demanding event in their lives. </dcterms:abstract>
